Dear Editor,

What a display by members of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) at the just concluded election for leadership of the Georgetown District. What a public embarrassment to the party. At a time when Guyanese are searching for an alternative to the blatant mismanagement and marginalization that disregards the hard-working citizens of this country, we see this chaotic disorganized upheaval of people squabbling over who should lead the Georgetown District.

If in fact the electoral process was flawed then the results should be made null and void, but if it was done transparently then the results should be upheld.  There seems to be a lot of questions to answer as to why a simple activity that involves persons uplifting ballot papers and ticking who they want to be their district leader and placing them in a ballot box, became marred by confusion. Wasn’t there an established process map for this event? Come on, this is a serious indictment of the administrators of the PNCR.

What does the PNCR think outsiders are thinking right now when they see that degree of lawlessness and poor administration of a simple process? Do they think they will attract new voters this way? Are they planning to retain the members of their constituencies with this kind of breakdown in respect and alleged dishonesty? Mr Murray in his pep talk before the madness began was right. The PNCR is the “eyepass” of the government. Actually they’ve become an eyesore in the political tapestry in Guyana.

Imagine the leader of the PNCR can’t even control his own flock. If a simple activity like electing a district chairman has so much controversy how can the PNCR really believe it would be an attraction for young voters and the undecided? How can the party that was once the ruling party be reduced to this discontented, disillusioned group? It’s the leadership that is the problem. Mr Burnham and Mr Hoyte must be turning in their graves when they see the rapid destruction of a force that was once truly the People’s National Congress. Mr Corbin must take the splinter out of his own eye before he calls on others to remove the plank that is in theirs. Some people are indeed good followers. If only they would recognize that and act accordingly.

I have penned it before in the columns of this newspaper that the PNCR should really try and correct its image very soon if it intends to become an electable force with which to be reckoned. The year 2011 is right around the corner!

Yours faithfully,
Richard Francois

The unfortunate thing about this whole episode is that the prisoner was sent to jail without a trial. The fact that Norton can scream rigging as the reason for his defeat does not make it so.Rigging of an election is the easiest way for losers to call foul because their attempt was rejected. Not only is Norton a sore loser but, one can gather from his utterances that his sole ambition is to smear the PNC into oblivion. What a shame and embarrasment coming from some one who talks so much.

I agree with you Milton, this guy talk too much, that
is why Mr Desmond Hoyte had to put him to his place,
because of his emty loudness, by the way why he and
the recall MP is not at UG anymore ?.

Confusion is the strategy to rig an election. The confusion was deliberate. Look for even greater confusion at PNC Congress such as no accesss to the voters list, no verification of the list, no roll call of voters, 10 and 11 years old voting like the last congress, disappearance of the ballot box,and votes more than delegates.

Embarrassing Richard??.. You sound like an honest consciencious foot soldier doing the war for the soul of the Guyanese people. However, the PNC LEADERSHIP as it exists today, is definitely not an organization equipped to lead this struggle.

Richard, everybody is fighting tooth and nail to be this or that in the party, but the problem with the PNC outfit is one of FOLLOWING and not LEADING. Before leading anything anywhere a person must first know who is following and why. Richard, take a quick look back behind you and you’ll see that hardly anybody is FOLLOWING the PNC anywhere, anymore so you don’t only have a LEADERSHIP problem but a FOLLOWING problem also. The ugly evidence reveals itself everyday in the diminishing power and representation in the Parliament.

At this point, I would suggest that the PNC as an organization take an appropriate sabbatical away from party politics so as to figure out first who is still following them behind, if anybody at all, then the natural leaders will emerge to take them where the FOLLOWERS decide that the organization must go. Remember folks, that it is the followers who will eventually decide the road map and the lay of the land for any democratic entity and not the leadership.

To this day, one of Forbes Burnham’s biggest mistakes as a LEADER was that he grew impatient in allowing the membership to set the course for his leadership. I think arrogance was the stumbling block here. He actually forgot that there will be no LEADERSHIP without FOLLOWERS and that bullying or cussing-out the people following behind is not an option.

Right now the PNC has become a top down political party, where the general membership is being lectured to. Change will come only when LEADERSHIP realize that to lead is a mandate to SERVE and not a license to RULE and lord over anybody.

Response: Wrong, Francois! We saw rigging. I repeat, we saw rigging, blantant, barefaced, bastardised rigging.

Reform my foot! Who do you people believe you are fooling?

This is still and it seems, will always be Burnham’s party. Ooops! Correction, now it is Corbin’s party, the rig master himself!

Who can King Corbin and his rigging PNC ask to vote for them with a straight face? You and your party with its carcass-smelling old political wrong-doings should just disband and give Guyana a clear and democratic alternative to the PPP, the AFC.

AFC, at your congress, give these thugs in the PNC a great example of what democracy is all about.
