Dear Editor,

The power of the media once again manifested itself last week after my letters about the blackout crisis in Berbice were published in both the Stabroek News and the Kaieteur News. The Guyana Chronicle and the Guyana Times did not publish the letter. I can only assume as to why they did not.

The situation in Berbice has improved significantly over the weekend and one can only ask the question as to how long this would last. It now seems that electricity in the homes of Berbicians has now become a luxury.

The General Manager of GPL operations in Berbice one Mr Allen appeared on TV on Friday afternoon along with the CEO of GPL Mr Bharrat Dindyal in what was an hour-long live call-in programme about the crisis. I swear to God that I had never seen this Mr Allen before in my entire life on TV much less on a live call-in programme interfacing with the public. The CEO in more than one way chided the GPL Berbice management for being deficient in their public relations skills and letting Berbicians be aware of what’s happening in the electricity sector even during the blackout crisis.

One of my sources indicated to me that the GPL CEO literally sat the entire day Friday to see that work was done to bring the Number 4 Generator back to life. Just imagine, GPL already has a ‘capable’ manager in Berbice and yet Georgetown personnel have to come and see that things are being done and liaise with Berbicians on a TV programme.  And Mr Prime Minister—you are as inefficient as they come in your portfolio as Minister responsible for electricity. Your words in last Saturday’s Stabroek News were too little too late.

One other startling revelation was made on the programme. Mr Allen stated that GPL regularly liaises with the general public through the Chairmen of the Neighbour-hood Democratic Councils (NDC’s) across Berbice. There are over 10 NDC’s across East Berbice. He said this meeting happens once per month. I was amazed to know of this. What or better yet, who are these NDC Chairmen representing?

What issues are being raised with the GPL manager on a monthly basis? These meetings should be kept with members of the community and not NDC Chairmen because many of the NDC’s across East Berbice have come under fire on multiple occasions by the Regional Administration of Region Six because they are not performing effectively.

Yours faithfully,
Leon Jameson Suseran

There is nothing such as ‘too much democracy’, Tannassee. That’s a catch phrase for defending and covering mediocrity and avoiding exposure. Disappointed at you, sir. But not surprised.

MT, ’slow down’ is another catch phrase in this context for ’staan easy, stay quiet, nah say nuthin’. Maybe you’ve been away too long from the local environment to catch the nuances of the catch phrases.

    • You Can Live Forever(-45) UNITED KINGDOM says:

Arite, Leon bhai, let’s hope it stick at 126. Line conditioner, UPS, memory card and other computer parts and fridge and electrical appliances not cheap, you know. I wonder if that’s why the BCC and business people don’t cry out, because they’re making $$$$$$$ on the sale of appliances and other accoutrement of the blackout culture.

Comment: The Prime Minister is responsible for electricity while Benn is responsible for hydraulics. Can anyone tell me what each responsibility entails? And how many hats can one man wear? Sam Hinds is Prime Minister or second to Jagdeo. He is also has ministerial responsibility for Communications and Mining and Utilities. Interestingly, though, as Communications Minister he had responsibility for the Advisory Committee on Broadcasting, but when CN Sharma aired a threat to the President one time too many, it as the President, wearing his Information Minister hat, who suddenly had responsibility for the ACB and suspended Sharma’s license. Only in Guyana can cabinet ministers have titles and they mean nothing.

    • Brandon Samaroo UNITED STATES says:

De prime minister you have to understand is “working on the problems” andy. You have to understand that this really is the PHENC’s fault because they were there for 28 years i dont know why you people cannot realize that it took 28 years for the PHENC to destroy the country and now it will take the PPP 100 years to put it back together.

So we ask for your undivided patience please be patient with the sugar recovery plan, the flooding mitigation plan, the water plan, the GPL plan, the Chronicle HENCN and GBC plan and most of all do something for this nation take a bullet or 2 the ppp will get the crime problem solved in 3030.

      Stay tuned folks stay tuned.

    • You Can Live Forever(-45) UNITED KINGDOM says:

In those days all we had was the Guyana Chronicle and they never had a letter section. The other newspapers used to struggle to find newsprint. Then there was no Internet and no SN and no blogging section. Wonder what you will say if you had 126 blackouts for 2009 (only ‘lil bit blackout’)in the Canadian province you’re living in?

    • Brandon Samaroo UNITED STATES says:

yeah hack the PPP would like to take credit for the internet and everything else in Guyana truth is that this is evolution of the world. GY is still seriously behind our caribbean and south American neighbours when it comes to all of these developed technologies.

    • (((:::))) CANADA says:

HKT bia we does get black out every day here….we does teck aff all de lights and unplug every ting to save on de bill ehehehehehehehehhee……..but my point is…not one of dem had mouth to go and protest de big kabaka house fuh wata and light or even wrong doings ehehehehehehehehehehehehhe….

Cack eye you have drunk so much of the PPP sup you are now laughing at your own and I use the term very very very very liberally here “Jokes”?

    • You Can Live Forever(-45) UNITED KINGDOM says:

Brackets & Colons, you still have a choice & can save on balls. B/cians have no choice & blackouts or not the bill is still the same. Enough reason to cry out for promises to be fulfilled.

    • Brandon Samaroo (PPP is the new and improved PNC Dictatorship) UNITED STATES says:

Exactly evil eye when the Kabaka was carrying on no one had the cohones to protest against him.

Now we neeed to ensure that this will never happen again that is why we have a responsibility to protest against the abuse of power, injustices and mismanagement of the country that the PPP is carrying on with. It sets a precedence for the next govt and so on and so on.

Besides if the internet was available in Burnhame time i can guarantee you the response would be the same. If not worse.
