Dear Editor,
Farmers in the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary regions who depend on these three rivers for drainage have a great fear of flooding. They gambled on the Autumn crop, but what will be the outcome for the coming Spring crop 2009-10? Farmers lost millions of dollars on the Spring crops 2007-08 and 2008-09. With climate change all over the world, Guyana is no better. When will work on the Hope canal start, and when will it be completed? The next heavy flooding of the Mahaica and Mahaicony Rivers may sweep away the houses.
Cleaning the mouth of the Abary River cannot prevent flooding because the river is silted up with debris and fallen trees. In addition, it is broader around the conservancy dam and the MMA/ADA embankment dam on the right bank of the river. It is like an L shape, and during flooding the water has nowhere to spread but just keeps rising and floods the left bank where farmers plant rice and rear livestock.
We know it is a great risk, but we wonder if any insurance company could insure our crop.
Yours faithfully,
Rudolph Singh

The farmers have every right to be. They should take the President’s advice and resort to aquaculture. They should ensure the land around the pond is built above the flood level if not the fish will swim away.
This flooding has nothing to do with climate change and they should blame the MMA for poor maintenace of the Scheme.
… “dis floodin en gat nutten fuh duh wid climate change” !!!!!?????
u need to put up or SHUT UP !… this assertion by u ,, needs to be supported by ur facts dat it is nat !….

If u live in the floodplain u will be flooded, that is why it is called a floodplain.
It is the same here in the UK, houses in the floodplain are being flooded more and more frequently.
Even this rich country cannot afford to hold back the rivers in all places….
it would be interesting to see what risk mitigation plans this fantastic government has put in place to alleviate this potential disaster from raining upon these farmers once again.
Let us start lining up all the excuses robert persaud can come up with
- Global warming
- is the PHENC fault, ow lauds 28 years – Bheri u there padna?
- AFC colluding with the gods to mek it rain.
- The drug traffickers are funding the rainy season.
- Is because we had to mek sure the rain was aligned with our macro economic goals.
- we filed the plan but a dog ate it.
- it is water accumulation not flooding.
Let the games begin!!!!
Fear flooding? Why? You made your homes and farms in a delta. Like the Nile Delta. Flooding will be a norm.
