Dear Editor,

Recently two highly respected women passed on, firstly our very own Olga Bone an educator for most of her life.

Olga Bone knew that when we were a colony we boasted a literacy rate of some 80% while in some parts of South America the rate was 80% illiteracy. In spite of all the adverse circumstances after independence she worked to see that Guyanese children got an education.

With her qualifications Olga Bone could have gone almost anywhere else to find employment, yet she stayed here. If there is a heaven, Olga Bone will get there.

Then there is Corazon Aquino, the former President of the Philippines, who after her husband’s assassination took over the leadership of his political movement. When she filled out the form to contest the presidential election, in the space for ‘occupation’ she stated ‘housewife.’  Cory, as she was known, led the Philippino nation to democracy. She was a devout Catholic and I am certain the Lord will look to her and say “‘Well done!”

Yours faithfully,
WP George
