Dear Editor,

With reference to your news item (SN Oct 21, 2009), ` Special Team to probe Roger Khan, Fineman murders – Police’, is this a big joke on the Guyanese nation?

It reminds me of the old saying, “putting cat to watch milk”.  Who in Guyana would trust the police with their proven track record for corruption?

This writer and some victims of a visa scam provided the police with written and oral evidence on a scam carried out by someone close to a Minister of the Government and the scammer was never charged by the police. The victims even reported their plight to a local newspaper stating that this scammer even threatened them with violence.

Do you expect any Guyanese to report to the police anything they know about Roger Khan or Fineman?

Roger Khan confessed and also placed an advertisement in the local press that he was working along with the security forces to fight crime in Guyana, so who in their right mind would report anything about Roger Khan to the police?

Remember what happened to George Bacchus, the informer?

The mere mentioning of Roger Khan’s name would send shivers through the ordinary Guyanese much less reporting any evidence to the same police that was working along with him in his so called crime fighting activities.

The present Commissioner of Police had his visas revoked by the U.S Government because the US had alleged that he had benefitted from the drug trade. The present Minister of Home Affairs also had visa problems with the U.S embassy. These are the people who will be heading the investigations with contact person Mr. Seelall Persaud, the Crime Chief.

Can Mr. Seelall Persaud as Crime Chief inform the Guyanese public why the man who conned people in the visa scam was never charged?

This so called investigation is to fool the Guyanese people.  But the Guyanese people are not foolish, they are just scared because of the victimization they will face if they say or write anything against the government.

I am calling for an International Commission of Enquiry with prominent jurists from countries like Canada, USA, UK and South Africa to carry out the probe and anything less than this would be a farce.

This so called “probe” will fail just as many other “probes” simply because the Guyanese people do not have faith and trust in the Police.

Yours faithfully,
Balwant Persaud

This investigation will waste the taxpayers money …by you know who. It will lead to nothingness as usual. What is needed is a truth and reconcillation probe along the lines of what took place in South Africa (by people beholden to no politician in Guyana). To be fare the probe should go back 17 years into the past administration prior to 1992, the second half of the probe should be from 1992 to present which adds up to 17 years. There you have it will the real politicians stand up and accept this.

  2. Raj UNITED STATES says:

Yes, the local probe is indeed a big joke designed to silient the opposition since the international community, given respect to sovereignity, will not proceed with any inquiry until the local investigation is completed. The PPP has again traped the Opposition. It will stall for time by dragging out the process then submit a limp report. The only way this may changed is if the Joint Opposition held streets protest or some other form of massive demonstration but Khemraj Ramjattan of the AFC is against street protests, Robert Corbin of the PNC cannot mobilise PNC supporters, the WPA diminished and other other small party insignificant in numbers.

Holy @#$%,don’t mek meh laugh, you mean to tell me you didn’t learn anything when the PNC and their duckings were having their daily antics in the streets of GT since 1992?eehhh.
There is nothing like a peaceful protest with the PNC.
