Dear Editor,
Life in Guyana is not for the weak of heart. To get anything done in Guyana you must prepare yourself for battle. From applying for a passport to applying for a house lot, one must arm oneself with patience and some good tonic.

The Customs Department at Linden is one such place; in order to uplift any package for which duty must be paid; one must go on the scheduled days of Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. As such, given the limited hours, one would expect that there is an efficient customs officer there to help deliver service to the community.

However it is such a complete disregard by GRA of people’s time to find that when you show up on these days, you are told to either wait because the officer has not arrived from Georgetown, or worse to be told, after waiting for hours, that he will no longer be coming to Linden.

For those of us whose contents of the package may not be for urgent use, and may not take much offence to waiting, there is no guarantee that the contents of your package will be secure  by the time the customs officer decides to take a trip.

Bearing in mind all the taxes that one has to pay in Guyana, the services offered should be better- it’s the least we should expect.

Yours faithfully,
(Name and address supplied)

Linden? You can also add better potable water, electrical supply, garbage collection, drainage, roads, roads sanitation, street lights, ambulance service, hospitals, medical supplies, fire service, mortuary……… oops! This applies to every community in Guyana.

I call upon the government to correct this unacceptable situation immediately. Am I to believe that the government can’t afford to hire a fulltime custom officer to live and work in Linden?

This is 2009 and the government is operating as if we are living in medieval times.
