Dear Editor,
Very often in the midst of stormy weather there is sunshine and beauty.
In sections of the media and experiences by citizens, we learn of the inappropriate and sometimes even crude behaviour by sections of the Police Force.
Today, I had occasion to visit the Immigration Department on Camp Road and there I found the quiescence of what a well run public office should be; the place was tidy, every member of staff, even on a Friday was neatly attired and courteous.
I travelled to many parts of the world and the Commissioner of Police ought to be justifiably proud of his Immigration Department staff.
The few members of the public I spoke with shared my views and joined in commending the leadership of the Immigration Department.
Let us hope that the high quality permeates other sections of the Police Force and indeed, our Public Service generally
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, J.P.

I have had this experience. This has been going on for a few years now. Mr. George Vyphius et al should take credit for this.
The immigration department runs like a well oiled machine because it encourages and facilitates the exodus.
Green your the mayor, what do you expect. You don’t have to put up with the non-sense the average Guyanese deal with over there. There job is serving the country, it’s expected for it to run well. The only thing that needs to be improved is the customer service, attitudes, and bribery ways.
That is quite true. If you know someone on the “inside” you don’t have to sit on the benches outside.
The reality there, Mr. Green, is that once you have that little contact, you walk through the door, to the extreme left and through the other door to the right of the booth. You go in, meet the relevant big wig and get your paper processed.
Also, Mr. Greene, could the Immigration Dept. explain how someone in a wheelchair is supposed to climb those pyramid steps into the office? And how if they do get in, how they are supposed to enter the narrow booths?
The demeanour and attire are one thing, but what about the other failing areas?
First of all I want to agree with Mr. Green. It’s a far cry from two years ago.
@ blacksage: perhaps you can send a letter to Mr. George Vyphius highlighting this short coming. And yes, you with your contact would do the same as anyone of us with our contact.
“The demeanour and attire are one thing, but what about the other failing areas?” Well, they are not the ministry of finance.
As a top PNC politician Hamilton Green did not have to write this letter. He must be commended for having the decency to openly acknowledge excellent service in a PPP-run government department. The accountable minister for the Immigration Department, Clement Rohee, should pat himself on the back today and relax with a glass of Grey Goose vodka.
here we go again, couldn’t you leave the politics out of this discussion.
Mr Greene should have his personnel at City Hall trained by the Immigration Personnel. A few months ago this department was seeking advice on how to solve a problem of confusion at their office. The diaspora recommended giving people numbers on arrival and they approached for service when their number was announced. Minister Rohee’s contribution in solving the problem is nil and the just reward for his incompetence should be termination.
we all knew who he is, jeez man get some dignity.
Yasu, man you always go off key. You bring the PPP into everything. Everything is PPP/PNC or Black/Indian – read some more and come up with fresh thinking!!!! As for Rohee patting himself on the back, he has been doing that all along – why you think things are a mess in Guyana? Rohee spends too much time doing everything else but the job he is paid to do!!!
Yesman, as a concerned citizen, and one who recognizes the inepitude of Government run services, it was incumbent on Mr. Green reporting on his observation. His observation, however, does not mean that all is well at the immigration department. When John Public makes the same observation, then and only then we can all apply for passports. My Guyanese passport expired forty years ago. I wonder what it would cost me to apply for one in NY. ISNM
Nonsense Yassuman ! Immigratiom personnel is not about attire but, more, preventing undesirables from entering the country. This joker talks about the premises being ‘tidy’ and the Commisioner of Police should be proud. You have got to be kidding me ! No wonder the country is so stink. These jokers accept mediocrity as excellence.
yasaman. I was just about to agree with you, until you mentioned Clement Rohee. Ow man, I was soooo close, but you had to spoil it.
green should run city hall and keep the ity clean like the immigration dept
yasu why you encouraging people to drink alcohol what is wrong with carilla bush or capadulla tea
Mr. Mayor,
According to foreign based Stabroek News bloggers, nothing good happens in Guyana. Guyana is a failed state and a dead state. This is their daily mantra. But we are on our way back and the PNC will rise again to take our people out of their current predicament. We made mistakes but we have learned a great deal since. Let’s not destroy the hopes and aspirations of our people. Thanks for sharing your experience with the reading public. The people who work in that department must be made to feel the pride and enjoy success of their efforts.
The immigration services now in services to the Guyanese nation, are much more better than when you “h.green” was prime minister in the 80’s.
You should run your city-counsel the same-way with dignity and proudness.
greene, you should take a page from the immigration book and apply it to your office.
