Dear Editor,
I purchased a book from Amazon.com and went to the Parcel Section of the Guyana Post Office to uplift the book but an officer there said that they do not accept the Guyana Driver’s Licence as a form of ID.
She said they only accept the National ID Card and Passport as identification documents.
A Driver’s Licence is the most widely used photo ID anywhere in the world. It seems that Guyana is the only country in the world that does not accept their own Driver’s Licence as a photo ID.
The Driver’s Licence is issued by a government entity, the Guyana Revenue Authority and it is not recognized by another government entity, the Guyana Post Office Corporation.
So we can assume that the Post Office Corporation does not have confidence in the integrity of the issuing of driver’s licences by a fellow government entity, the GRA.
Contradictions, conflicts of interest and confusion are the order of the day in a dying nation. Wondering why people want to migrate?
Yours faithfully,
Balwant Persaud

In Trinidad, your driver’s permit is accepted as indentification for any transaction.
The Guyana Driver’s licence in its current form is woefully unacceptable and rightfully should not be accepted as a form of identification. Someone in authority need to review this matter and have the licence issued in laminated form
Not accepting a valid driver’s licence as ID. Yet another asinine way of making life in Guyana difficult. Somebody was even suggesting a dress code – to buy stamps!
When Yasuman go to sleep he wonder why didn’t Cheddie didn’t disband the License officer and start new one. LMAO
Yes there is a dress code for entering a gov’t office.
But of course the rediculousness of not accepting a driver’s licence
as a form of identity is so silly.
Do the police accept driver’s licences as a form of identity?
Such driver had better not be a post office employee for then the tales would be turned!
Backward? Progressive?
Where is Dr Randy Persaud, the guy who gloats and gloats…?
So if a cop stops and asks you for a driver’s licence and you produce it, will he then ask for another form of id to substantiate it? This is unbelievable.
You know this has unfortunate historical roots. Indeed the driver’s license, or as we call it in Guyana, “your book”, has been in the past repeatedly falsified by many who attempted to get their license by illegal means. It was also associated with much bribery–the talk about people “buying” their books. At that time licenses were issued by the traffic dept of the Police Force. I’m sure that most other govt institutions are aware of that and by right, they refuse to accept the document. Clearly, there is need for changes in the document design itself, but it is the integrity of the issuing agency that’s the real problem I assume.
Satar said he was going to change that about 3 yrs ago, but then that is 3 yrs GT time .All joke aside they need to change the license .
balwant, they are right to not accept. too many people with bogus licences around. i know, i had one of those in the 80’s.
