Dear Editor,
The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) reiterates that the low volume of sugar production is causing the imbroglio in the sugar industry. Two decades ago the industry was producing less than 200,000 tonnes sugar per annum and the situation was almost similar to today’s. Over the last five years, the situation was as follows:-
The Union calls on Management of the Corporation to explain to the nation:-
What is responsible for the significant variances between the Corporation’s targets and actual production?
What led to the almost twenty five (25) per cent decline in tonnes cane per hectare between 2007 and 2008, despite utilizing greater quantities of chemicals and fertilizers?
Was the same acreage of land available for harvest in 2008 as in 2004?
Yours faithfully,

GAWU needs to repudiate the PPP leadership and call for the privatization of Guysuco.
The government has failed at running such a large corporation and if GAWU really cares about its people they need to be clear that the PPP and or any government that takes over from them must privatize the company.
Aslim. De soil give up. No matta how much fertilizers you put pam am, yo na go get betta production. De soil get too alkaline, so stop beating a dead horse. De days fo sugar cane cultivation ova in Guyana. De government know dat, but dem gat to find wok fo dem supporters. Play de game and shut yo mouth.
One reason for the decline is poor field management and the type of work done by the workers.
The workers rush through their tasks only thinking of going home early or to the rumshop.
The throw away the chemicals and fertilisers etc etc
