Dear Editor,

We are all horrified by the brutal torture of the teenage child now lying in a hospital bed, physically and emotionally scarred. He could be our son, grandson, brother, nephew.

The organisations named below ask you to join us and other Guyanese organisations and individuals to stand in silent solidarity with the boy and his family, today from 3.30 pm to 4.45 pm.

We propose to stand vigil on the Lamaha Street pavement opposite the Georgetown Public Hospital. We suggest that in keeping with the idea of a silent vigil there should be no individual picket signs, only 4 banners to be held at different points of the vigil saying “Solidarity against Torture”. (Alicea Foundation has generously agreed to provide the banners)

Let us show this boy directly – and other victims indirectly – that enough of us from across a spectrum of groups and sectors in Guyana are ready to be vigilant in protecting them.

Yours faithfully,
Joy Marcus for Red Thread
Clonel Samuels for Women across
Differences
Josephine Whitehead for Help & Shelter
Omattie Madray for Everychild Guyana
Denise Dias for Alicea

It’s heart warming to see people and various groups coming out in solidarity for the tortured child. The chorus of opposition to police brutality is a good momentum.

By the way, where are the Muslim and Hindu groups on this matter?

    • Valedictorian CANADA says:

The groups you mentioned will never condemn this regime or hold them responsible. Events to come will push the torture out of focus and it will be swept under the rug. The case will be dismissed after many years of languishing on someone’s desk!

    • La Dorada UNITED STATES says:

I can’t see what there is about such barbarism to be hesitant or equivocal about. Where ARE they indeed!

  2. BORAPORK: TERMINATE TORTURERS CANADA says:

There has been too much silence. Maybe silence contributed to its occurrence. A lot of noise is needed to send a loud and clear message that people are fed up and will take this type of treatment no more. The time for meetings over tea and cookies are over. Crack the whip. It’s the only message that this government understands and to which it reacts.

  3. Danny DeAbru FRANCE says:

Fully support this geste. The entire nation should stand in silent solidarity until the child has fully recouvered.

  4. Georgie UNITED STATES says:

C’mon guys ! Who cares about ’silent solidarity’ with the tortured child. The ‘powers’ will resort to their mansions in gated communities and ‘live for the weekend’. Swimming pools, jacuzzis, mini theaters, party all weekend. Oh yes! Pink champagne on ice.

was dramatic after watching the pic in the new papers tear did come to my eyes,
