Dear Editor,
I am always amused by the histrionics I witness almost daily in Guyana’s media. Just a few days ago, I was amused by the letter that sought to expose a seeming farce at UG. I refer to the scathing attack on the students as a whole, and also the exposure of the entire milieu at the Turkeyen Campus. If this is the case, the people and the place deserve opprobrium. It is a shame! My take on this is that CXC across the region, moreso in Guyana is quite a sham. One can acquire a plethora of distinctions and yet be inadequate intellectually, socially and by extension, in life as a whole. I wonder how no one responded to this brutal, concise, and effective harangue. Is it that not only skills in rhetoric are lacking, but also in writing? Is it that Guyana needs to go back to the GCE and re-elevate the standard? Guyana should have ‘University on the Air’ once again. It is time all Guyana see what we have.

My second issue is with Guyana’s most recent bête noir, President Bharrat Jagdeo. Already his penchant for ‘cussing out’ is a major feature of his leadership repertoire. His fulminations have created an aura not dissimilar from that of a quidnunc. He is now one of the most rebarbative individuals around. He gives no one-on-one interview, no elaborate answers and explanations, and the list may be extended ad infinitum. When Freddie tries to draw a comparison between him and Mr Barack Obama, that is really getting hyperbolic. I suggest a change in his PRO people, and that he show more decorum and diplomacy.

As a note, I think of the hypocritical canvassing of the likes of Dr Randy Persaud, Mr Vishnu Bisram and Mr Anand Boodram. I simply ask that they come and live here. They heap encomiums on their ‘man’ and Guyana. Hey, come and let Guyana’s police pull them over. Come and go to the supermarket here. Come and visit the GPO and the Immigration Office, etc. They should, for then they would not even have to write.

The final grouse (for now) is with NCN. The recent tiff over the airing of Komal Chand’s ‘Close Up’ should not be lamented. ‘Close Up’ is another attempt at propagandizing. Those at NCN do not perform. Now when the PPP are stalling on issuing radio licences, my anger intensifies. They cannot deliver, and yet they are loath to relinquish. What a democracy!
Yours faithfully,
Shane Rizwan

I learned a new word today! Quidnunc – a person who seeks to know all the latest news or gossip; busybody. From Latin quid nunc – what now? Thanks to Merriam-Webster.

  2. Walter H. Persaud THAILAND says:

    Mr. Rizwan:

Better a President of few words than a citizen who seems so desperate to demonstrated erudition that people have to consult dictionaries to understand him. You agree?

In plain language: next time you write – “keep it simple”! That’s what bright people do.
