Dear Editor,
There are not enough superlatives to describe the courageous act of the dozen soldiers and three civilians who risked their lives to recover the body of Ms Aliya Bulkan from the bottom of Kaieteur Falls. For years, the GDF has endured criticism for the unsavoury acts of a few. Now, we have something which allows us to cheer the soldiers who led the recovery effort. And applause they deserve. As the Bulkan family said (SN November 16) and Gerry Gouveia added (‘The GDF party which recovered Aliya Bulkan’s body should be applauded’ SN, November 18), we can’t thank them enough for their professional duties.
The way the soldiers carried out this assignment is sure to change the way people look at the GDF which has seen some negative publicity in recent months. Special commendation must go to the team. They have uplifted the image of the GDF. Their bravery and courage and their willingness to respond to a desperate call should be emulated by their colleagues.
Theirs was an act of selflessness. In carrying out their mission, they exhibited a high level of competence, skill, discipline and confidence, at great risk to their own lives, and after reading about the dangers they faced, I believe the future of the army will be in good hands if we have more of their kind. They hold out a promise of a better tomorrow. My words of praise are not enough, indeed no words are enough, as the Bulkan family said.
And for the family itself, every Guyanese I met in the last two weeks in NY shares the family’s grief over the loss of a brilliant child. And they hope as time passes, the pain of the loss of a child will be lessened on the family.
Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram

Good letter, Vishnu but let us not waste the catastrophie of the girl’s suicide. You should have called for the government to install safety barriers at the falls.
The girl’s death should graphically teach the authorities a BIG lesson about their complacency.
Theirs was an act of selflessness. In carrying out their mission
For god sakes people it is not like they resurrected this young lady they retrieved her body in what is and should be a routine recovery process for which they are trained.
This is part of their job.
Why don’t you write a letter everyday here congratulating the post men and women for their service delivering the mail?
Bisram again you are a farce and your letters are a useless waste of time. Why don’t you write a letter telling us where you are headed to next in the world? maybe monkey mountain?
Bisram you are a face!!!! Where are your letters expressing OUTRAGE at the TORTURE of the 14 yr. old boy!!!!
You were quiet as a church mouse… Go do a poll on how much water falls off the Kaieteur Falls.
Bisram is an outrage.
VB please, didn’t you condem the entire army the other day…i don’t understand you period.
Not everyone can by as even-handed as you Pepie. Come to think of it I do now recall that other article. Strange.
Bob since when you have a vested interest in even handedness?
I get the distinct feeling that VB likes to see his name in the papers. The above is useless and a waste of printing space because he is regurgitating what as been said by other persons.
In other words, here we have the soldiers doing their job and all we get is a collective yawn. I feel your pain bro. I wouldn’t want to see they had to go fight a war. I wonder what would be the response then.
BTW, did we meet in NY?
Bisram, don’t worry with the blabbers. It’s normal, everyone listen to what they want to hear.Maybe you should write a letter highlighting the boy who they are all using for their circus.Oh!The time wasters.
Vishnu Bisram ! Stop it ! The military could not even defend themselves against the Surinamese – their job and , here you are showering praise on a recovery mission in their own country. Okay ! They now have, I presume, the coordinates of the territory. Just put it in your GPS. Mr. Bisram, I think you should get a room. Ewwwwwww !
Not so fast bisram.
Bisram should conduct a pool to find out what the Guyanese people
think about the Guyana Defence Force and Guyana Police Force.
I want to know the percentage of people in Guyana that feel safe but I don’t want Bishram to do it.
hahhahha ummm sky you seem a bit skeptical of the polester?
Was the body of the girl that committed suicide at the falls ever found? Sorry don;t get to read guyana news much. Tks
