Brothers, and former Queen’s College chess players, Dr Moti and Mahendra Ramgopal, sponsored the Junior segment of the 2008 National Chess Championships. Both brothers are based overseas, and still play chess actively in their adopted country. The Ramgopals provided a trophy, some chess sets, chess clocks, chess books and $60,000 in prize money for the Juniors. Taffin Khan, 16, of West Demerara, captured the first prize with a magnificent performance of fourteen wins from the fourteen games that he played. He also won the special prize of ‘Most Disciplined Chess Player’ among the Juniors. In photo, Taffin, right, receives one of his many prizes, a book, Standard Chess Openings from the Ramgopals at the presentation ceremony.
