Out of control: In this Orlando Charles photo a fire, suspected to have been started by a burning rubbish heap which got out of control, can be seen consuming the vegetation in the area behind the head office of the Guyana Forestry Commission in Kingston, Georgetown. When Stabroek News arrived at the scene shortly after 3.30pm yesterday the flames were still raging but the fire service was there and managed to win the battle against the flames. A security guard who works in the vicinity told this newspaper that the forestry commission was forced to move its vehicles out to the main road. The guard said that someone had lit a heap of rubbish in the area around 2pm yesterday and the flames caught the surrounding vegetation and blazed out of control. More than an hour after the fire started, he said, no one had informed the fire service. A part of a sewerage pipe which runs to the river from an empty lot where a hotel was to be constructed, sustained some damage.
