Lethem to become ‘frontier town’

Lethem is expected to become a significant frontier town to facilitate increased trading between the borders of Guyana and Brazil as a result of the Takutu Bridge set to be commissioned shortly.

According to a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the government has already begun making this a reality with the building of a multi-purpose complex at Lethem which will serve as a port authority, and the new Lethem hospital. The release said that all the civil works and equipment installation have been completed at the hospital as stated by Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran.

The hospital has modern equipment and will offer a range of services. The government, the release said, is training hundreds of nurses and among them are students from Region Nine who are slated to return to Lethem to serve at the new hospital.

According to Dr Ramsaran, the administration strives to have equity of services and improved quality health care delivered in Guyana and as such it “continues to pioneer the reconstruction of the physical infrastructure of the health sector in order to provide Guyanese with the best and modern health care facilities.”
