A pregnant woman and her eight-month-old baby who were being deported from Canada on Thursday were taken off a flight bound for Guyana after the mother was deemed unfit to travel, according to a report in the Toronto Sun yesterday.

The report said that Savita Devi Boodram, 42, of Toronto, and her baby were boarding a flight at Pearson airport when a letter was received from her doctor, her lawyer Guidy Mamann was reported as saying. Mamann said the doctor told immigration officials that Boodram is suffering from a high-risk pregnancy and therefore should not be travelling.

“It is pretty harsh to be putting her on a plane,” he was quoted by the Toronto Sun as saying. “She is pregnant and has a child in one hand and they’re sending her back to Guyana.”

Mamann related that Boodram arrived in Canada as a visitor several years ago and overstayed her visa. She married a Canadian man, who suffers from schizophrenia, he said.

“She has little money and no relatives in Guyana,” her lawyer said, adding “The airline used common sense that the immigration department didn’t have.”

Anna Pape, of the Canada Border Services Agency, told the Toronto Sun she couldn’t discuss the case, citing privacy laws.

“The decision to remove someone from Canada is not taken lightly,” Pape said . “Everyone ordered removed from Canada is entitled to due process before the law.”

She said removal orders are subject to various levels of appeals.

“Unsuccessful applicants must respect our laws and leave Canada when advised,” Pape told the Toronto Sun. “The integrity of the system depends on this.”

She noted that her officials consult with medical professionals and rely on their expertise in determining if a person can travel.

  1. I am a little confused. If immigration is saying that officials consult with medical professionals and rely on their expertise in determining if a person can travel, then how was this woman slated to fly and at the last minute taken off the flight? If medical officals were consulted then she would not be on the plane in the first place.
The article is not clear as to when she married this canadian citizen, but how is she being deported if she is legally married to him. Moreover if this man is sick one would assume this his wife would be entrusted with his care.

    • Fulltimebanker, you got a point there, this story is very confusing, and more info is needed.

    • SWAT UNITED STATES says:

      Fulltimebanker,
Like you, I’m also confused, and you hit the hammer right on the head when you asked why is she being deported if she is legally married to this man and my answer is that if she married him knowing he suffers from schizophrenia, the Canadian law may consider the marriage not binding, because a person in his state cannot legally entered into a binding contract like a marriage.

    • james CANADA says:

Being married to a canadian does not give her automatic landed status. The decision to take her off the flight was made by the airline and not the immigration dept.

    • BORAPORK CANADA says:

fulltimebanker: Doctors often differ in their diagnoses. They differ also based on who is paying their fees. The defence and the prosecution have their expert witnesses.

As a layman and knowing the attempts people manufacture to prevent removal, this last minute letter is one more such ruse in my humble opinion. Put her in an air ambulance.

    • mrs murray CANADA says:

even if she is married to a canadian sometimes u have to go back to your country until your papers go through. but as u guys said the story is confusing, i don’t think they are giving all the details of the story, or the don’t know all the details.

    • Evan Thomas CANADA says:

She broke the law and overstayed, then married to stay and cover the illegality, a usual tatic. And then lie about no family in Guyana or going back to live in sub-human conditions. The same situation currently occured in the US with one who went in with false documents….when will you guys stop this shameful and desparate behaviour and you have a government in Guyana which you love and democratically elected?

    • paul GUYANA says:

Immigration have no saying if the airline refused to take the passenger based on the doctor advise because if indeed thewoman is 8 month pregnant and complications pertaining to the unborn child developed while on board -the law suit will be on the airline not immigration -That is one slick lawyer-hats off to him.Know the system so you can circumvent it.

MY friend, she came on holiday visa and overstayed her time. There is no mention if papers were file with the immigation for her to obtain her permanent status although it is mentioned that she had a lawyer. If no paper were filed or lf she was dined permanent status thet means that she was living here illegally and should have left when told to do so or file an appeal and follow due process.

    • myinput CANADA says:

You start first if you are a Guyanese.

There has to be much more to this story than what is stated. If married to a Canadian, why is she not a resident. How long has she overstayed her time? Canada and USA will not arbitrarily deport someone, they have to be interviewed and processed. The story has a huge whole in in. Details!! Details!!

  5. BADGIRL#7 CANADA says:

  6. concern guyanese BARBADOS says:

that is so true mr bigs.

  7. Guy123 UNITED KINGDOM says:

people have been busy bashing Barbados, while Guyanese are being sent home from all over the world for overstaying their welcome,Canada is a very large country, why isn’t anyone condemning them for this inhumane act of putting a pregnant woman on a plane like that,no feelings!!

    • Well said Guy123 . This woman should be allowed to have the baby in Canada and the Guyanese living there should help her because she has no money . I am calling on the Guyanese in Canada to step up and help one of your own , after all ; Barbados got a bashing because we asked illegal immigrants to return to their respective homelands . Guy123 , you are perfectly correct when you state that Canada is much bigger and may I add , wealthier , than Barbados .

    • james CANADA says:

people are not bashing guyanese being sent home, they are bashing the way barbados is doing it.

    • Leslyn UNITED STATES says:

DON’T WORRY ABOUT HER, THE GUYANESE LIVING THERE WILL HELP HER — THEY HAVE NO CHOICE. IT IS CALLED PAYING TAXES — NORTH AMERICAN STYLE. THIS IS WHY WE ALL HAVE TO PAY SO MUCH. IT IS CALLED WELFARE, SOME OF US LEAVE GUYANA AND WORK WHILE OTHERS GET PREGNANT AND LIVE ON WELFARE YEAR AFTER YEAR,(TRUST ME ON THIS, I SEE IT ON MY DESK EVERY SINGLE DAY) AND WHY? BECAUSE THE UNBORN IS USUALLY ADDED TO THE BUDGET (MORE CHILDREN, MORE MONEY) SO NOT ALL OF THEM HAVE TO WORK THE WAY WE DO. SHE HAS AN 8 MONTH BABY AND PREGNANT AGAIN, CHECK THE WMS SYSTEM AND YOU WILL SEE HOW MUCH THE HUSBAND IS GETTING — IT IS CALLED BEING ON DISABILITY. OH IT JUST GOES ON AND ON AND THE FRIGHTENING REALITY IS NO END IN SIGHT.

  9. VIPER UNITED STATES says:

if she was in canada for several years, had a 8 month old baby why was the baby [who is a Canadian by birth] being sent back to live in another country??? wouldn’t that baby be an illegal allien in guyana too??? then Guyana should deport the baby, should they? this needs more info on the subject & if it is true then immigration had to eat their own ‘dudu’ back esp since they didnt consulted with the doctor before placing the woman on the flight… at times these ’so called experts or geniuses’ are nor more than a jackass.. they act & think like one … doesnt surprised me though because they think tey are GODS!

    • Ghost UNITED STATES says:

How could the child be illegal in Guyana? A child is entitled to citizenship in any country in which either of their parents were born.

    • BIG1 UNITED STATES says:

VIPER,,,The baby is entitled to Canadian Citizenship, and if sent to Guyana would also be able to get deritive citizenship based on the mother, however the child can return to Canada after attaining the age of 18.

    • Dear Land of Guyana CANADA says:

The baby will have dual citizenship and what about baby bonus????? the child is Canadian.

    • cargie CANADA says:

If you have no status so does your child
