(Antigua Sun) – A Guyanese man has found himself in deeper trouble with the law after he attempted to perpetrate a fraud on the court.

The 22-year-old is charged with unlawful carnal knowledge.
The man appeared in the St John’s Magistrate Court before Chief Magistrate Ivan Walters last week, when he was expected to be committed to stand trial in the high court for the offence.

The prosecutor at that time notified the court that he was in possession of a letter purportedly signed by the victim’s mother and stating that they wished to drop the charges.

However, Magistrate Walters said he was not accepting the document and requested that the woman come to court and make the declaration herself.

The case was adjourned to Monday (21 Sept) at which time the prosecutor told the court that checks were made with the victim’s mother and father who denied any knowledge of the document.

The Antigua Sun understands that the accused was the one who took the letter to the prosecution, supposedly on behalf of the child’s family.

After the Guyanese man left the court he was immediately picked up and detained by the police and is likely to face charges related to trying to pervert the course of justice.

The 22-year-old is accused of having sexual intercourse with a 14 year-old girl. The offences are alleged to have occurred between 12 and 28 Feb and 1 and 31 March 2009
