Court rules against new boundaries

A proclamation of new constituency boundaries in St Kitts and Nevis was yesterday ruled invalid by the courts.

The proposed changes had been challenged by the opposition Peoples Action Movement (PAM).

The court ruling in favour of the opposition means that the old boundaries stand and would have to be used if the government decides to now call a general election.

PAM leader Lindsay Grant said his party had been vindicated by the court in its “pursuit for democracy, freedom and fairness and justice in the elctoral system”.

The government of Prime Minister Denzil Douglas did not say immediately whether it would appeal the ruling.

Feuding drug gangs clash

Eight people were killed in a weekend shooting in Puerto Rico when feuding drug gangs opened fire in a crowded bar.

Police said those killed included the unborn child of a pregnant woman who was wounded.

A nine year old boy was also among the 20 injured in the shooting at the La Tombola bar in a suburb of the capital San Juan.

Gunmen with automatic weapons entered the bar late on Saturday and opened fire on a crowd there celebrating its reopening. A police spokesman said a group of people inside the bar responded by pulling out their guns and firing back at the gunmen.

The shooting has been described as one of the worst in Puerto Rican history.

Jean working on memoir

Former Fugees frontman, US-based Haitian Wyclef Jean is working on a memoir.

The solo star is collaborating with Rolling Stone writer Anthony Bozza on a book expected to cover Jean’s life from his childhood in rural Haiti to his musical career and philanthropic work.

The singer who has just turned 37, is known for hits including “We Trying to Stay Alive” and “Gone Till November”.
