Bandits shoot UWI professor

(Trinidad Express) – A University of the West Indies mathematics professor was shot and robbed on Tuesday night, after being ambushed by two bandits just as he and his wife arrived at their St Augustine home.

According to police reports, Prof Balswaroop Bhatt, 60, and his wife got to their Smart Street home between 9.30 pm and 10 pm. As they got out the car, they were approached by two bandits who had stopped outside the house in another vehicle.

They demanded the keys to Bhatt’s Toyota Corolla, as well as his wallet.

Bhatt struggled with the two men and one of them fired a shot, hitting him in the left leg. The men then escaped with Bhatt’s wallet.

Bhatt was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where he had surgery last evening.

A relative of Bhatt, who did not want to be named, said, ’We are doing okay.’
