Dear Editor,
According to the Municipal and District Councils Act, Cap 28:01, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown is the local organ responsible for conducting the affairs of the city and its people.

However, during the month of December, 2008 the streets of Georgetown were seen crowded with vendors on the pavements, making it practically impossible for shoppers and other pavement users to freely use the pavements. Shoppers were forced to walk on the busy roads and there was no evidence that the city council did anything to improve the situation. In my opinion this was allowed to happen in contravention of the city by-laws.

Each day the streets and pavements were left with piles of garbage from vending the previous day. How can the city council allow this situation to happen? The citizens of Georgetown pay their rates and taxes, and they deserve better.

In this New Year, 2009, I sincerely hope that the pavements are cleared so that we can once more have free access to them.
