Dear Editor,
Reading your recent article on the backlog of inquests (‘249 inquests were pending at end of ’07 – Attorney General,’ SN 12.1.09) has prompted me to observe that the same legal system which we depend on for justice can be used to frustrate it.

How many appeals are pending, and some may even go to the Caribbean Court of Justice. That symbol of justice − the scales − is no longer representative of what prevails in Guyana.

I note, however, initiatives to improve the system with mediation and law reform, not omitting more members of the judiciary, however we need a jump start so that justice will no longer be denied by being delayed.
