I attend a popular public secondary school on the East Bank of Demerara and I would like to divulge my dissatisfaction with the education that taxpayers invest in. I am a new student and from what has occurred during the time that I have been with the school I am not quite satisfied. At my school teachers are very scarce. Several on the staff are absent for different reasons during the school term, even unbelievably, just after a three-week school break. The respective subject teachers may be available at the school from time to time but sometimes fail to be present for the periods timetabled.

Assignments are presented, but when inquired about later, teachers would sometimes say they can’t find them, which is frustrating for students who get pressure from parents and peers to ensure that the work is done in whatever little free time is available.

What I would like to recommend that school boards and the ministry do is to employ temporary teachers for the various subjects when the regular teachers are absent.

I think it would be useful for officials to have one-to-one meetings with the students of a school to find out the truth about how we feel about our education.
