Residents should work together to combat noise nuisance

Dear Editor,

With reference to various letters to the press and a recent one by Mr Leon Suseran (‘Has anyone been successful in prosecuting noise-makers?’ GC April 14), enquiring whether anyone was ever successful in prosecuting noise nuisance, please be advised that after careful investigation I found that Senior Counsel Rex McKay took action against the Georgetown Cricket Club and was successful.

It is always better when a number of persons in any area work together and share the legal costs.

I think very soon there will be others who are successful.  My understanding is that the judges are very considerate about noise nuisance, which is why I am troubled that magistrates give permission for the most vulgar and lawless of shows, going into the wee hours of the morning in quality residential areas, knowing full well that noise is destructive to people and their lives.

It is also right that the Chancellor of the Judiciary gets involved and charts policy guidelines for magistrates, especially the new young ones on stream on the noise issue which is causing so much misery to people, students, the ill and the hardworking.

Yours faithfully,
Roshan Khan
