Calliope returns

Dear Editor,
The lady first came to British Guiana in 1952, and subsequently biennially up to 1973; further visits were in 1992, 1994 and 1997.
She probably would have made clandestine visits during the period after 1997, and would have left with much sorrow, based on her interaction with some of the recipients of her past gifts

In 2009, she came once more; after five days of performances, she left, pleased with those persons on whom she had bestowed her gift of music. During her brief visit, she listened to performances by adults, children, and one, which was a pleasant surprise to her – the nursery schools.

Prior to boarding her flight to Mount Olympus, she mentioned how elated she was at the competency displayed by the adjudicators during the Guyana Music Festival 2009.

The lady referred to in this correspondence is none other than the Muse, Calliope.
According to Hesiod (ca 800 bc), she was commonly referred to as, “She of the beautiful voice.”
The lyrist, Orpheus, was her son.
Yours faithfully,
C.S. Vaughn MSM
