Dear Editor,

As a person involved in supporting the action against Starlite Drive-In, by Mr Roshan Khan, I am truly amazed that the Starlite has disregarded the court order which restricted it from making noise between certain hours.

As a former military person, I find contempt for the highest institution of law in the country most disgraceful.  I understand that Mr Roshan Khan was out of the country that night.  But come Saturday, May 2, at 4pm the noise commenced, and it went on until after 2.30am, completely contrary to the Judge’s order, which said that between the hours of 10pm to 2.30am, and specifically on May2-3 music should not be played excessively.  At about 12.30 am the noise level eased a bit, but continued to disturb my rest until after 1.30am, when I took a sleeping tablet and then dozed off.  I later understood that the noise continued well until after 2.30am, with boom boxes from four wheelers going later.  They used most vulgar words in some songs.

Is it that the law is impotent?  The police did not secure the show, but provided traffic control; they knew that there was an order, but did not stop the show.  The police are supposed to protect citizens and support the court system of Guyana.

I am requesting Mr Roshan Khan and others to take this matter up with their lawyers. The Starlite has no respect for the citizens of the area, and has disregarded a court order, unless the court has become a mere rubber stamp.

Mr Khan, please help us as soon as you return.  Also the police are conducting an investigation into the noise nuisance; citizens in the area can visit Sparendaam Police Station to give a statement to the cadet officer there.  If the police are doing this, it is most commendable, but why did they not stop the show at 10pm? Again Starlite is advertising another show on Saturday, May 16.  Will they allow it to go beyond 10pm?  We are watching; Mr Khan will be back, and the press and the entire media should monitor this; so should the EPA and the police.  No one is above the law.

What about our government which calls for respect for the law, do they care?  Is the Starlite Drive-in so powerful?

Yours faithfully,
Stanley Adolph
