Police regularly patrolling Eastern Highwayto ensure no recurrence of ‘pranks’

Dear Editor,
The Guyana Police Force is responding to a letter published in the Stabroek News of April 30, 2009, under the caption ‘Not such an innocent prank.’

The writer of the letter, Dr Joyce Jonas, indicated that during the past several months there have been occasions at night when a group of young men who ‘lime’ on the bridge at the exit to the Sophia Exhibition Site near the eastern end of Duncan Street, place a wooden lantern post across Eastern Highway and then secrete themselves behind some bushes to see whatever accident will occur.

Dr Jonas stated that there had been several accidents, and in one of them two men on a scooter ran into the post resulting in the motor cycle being severely damaged. She also called on the youths to stop these types of ‘games.’

The Guyana Police Force wishes to thank Dr Jonas for bringing these incidents to our attention since the police were not aware of their occurrence, as it appears that no reports had been made by the victims of these pranks.

However, subsequent to the article being published, police ranks made checks and noticed that several wooden logs had been placed along the eastern parapet in front of the Sophia Exhibition Site, apparently to prevent motorists from parking in that area.
The police have since been making regular patrols of the area and no recurrence of these pranks has been observed.

While the police will be maintaining their vigilance in this matter, we urge residents to continue to assist by alerting us whenever they are aware of any such likely activity.
Yours faithfully,
Ivelaw Whittaker
