Shri Prakash Gossai was a beacon of Hinduism

Dear Editor,

The death of the late Shri Prakash Gossai was a great shock to me. Prakash, being an eminent, autocratic and an energetic personality demonstrated a sense of humility and dedication to his religion.

Apart from being an academic, his versatility in the field of Indian music and singing has created a harmonious atmosphere not only in Guyana, but around the Caribbean and North America on the whole. Shri Prakash would be remembered for his eloquent and melodious voice which brought solace and peace of mind after listening to his devotional renditions, prayers and chantings from the holy Raamcharitmaanas.

At a younger age, he excelled in Indian film songs, where he won the first Mukesh singing competition. As an associate of the late Prakash Gossai, I am very proud to say that he was seen as the ‘beacon and fortress’ of Hinduism in Guyana, and all his religious recordings would remain ever verdant.

His physical body is no more, but his soul would continue to be among us, which is worthy of emulation.

Yours faithfully,
Tejchandra Deo
