Eating pork in the national interest

Dear Editor,

The reassuring news in the Stabroek News that President Jagdeo and the cabinet would partake of a pork buffet prepared by New Thriving Restaurant would no doubt be good for the pork eaters in Guyana.

Most Hindus and Muslims and many Christians and other people in Guyana do not eat pork, and they have good reason not to do so. It is not clear who paid for this buffet.

Pigs have been given a bad name. In the Judaic religion swine were forbidden. As I read the story, this image of the cabinet gorging on pork in our national interest… somehow George Orwell’s Animal Farm came to mind, and how the pigs and humans became one.

And I thought that as commendable as President Jagdeo and the cabinet are to eat local pork, it would be similarly commendable should they and their families use the public health system, and let their children go to schools in the public education system.

Yours faithfully,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
