Dear Editor,
I refer to Harry Hergash’s letter in the SN edition of August 28 under the caption ‘No Indian Guyanese in last Monday’s “What the people say.”’ I am so sick and tired of people referring to everything that happens in our society in racial terms.

It is persons like Mr Hergash who contribute to our country being divided according to race, by indicating that the feature was biased because there were no Indians and then saying that, “Everyone knows that in Guyana opinion on this and all political matters is generally split along racial lines.”

Well it does not have to be that way; it is we Guyanese who have allowed ourselves to be divided by race by the little things we say and do, such as the statement Mr Hergash made in his letter.  Did he ever stop to think that there could have been many other reasons why there were not more Indians in that feature on that particular day? As Guyanese we need to stop making race an issue.

As far as I am concerned if each and every one of us just went about our daily routines and did not base every little thing that happened on race, we just might be able to stamp out the racial split and live as ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny.’  After all God made each and every one of us in the likeness of his own image and race has nothing to do with it.
Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
