It is time for Dr Van West Charles to move on

Dear Editor,

Dr Richard Van West should give it a rest. He was so sure of defeat by Mr Corbin that he withdrew at the last minute and supported Winston Murray (a wise decision, I daresay). Mr Winston Murray, a politician I admire for his many years of service to the people of Guyana, and respect for his unbroken commitment to the PNC, has conceded that although there were “irregularities” in the voting process, Mr Corbin’s margin was too wide to attribute his victory to rigging.

It seems that Dr Van West Charles and indeed other leadership aspirants are incapable of putting personal ambitions aside to work for the common good. Instead of vilifying Mr Corbin and by extension the party, Mr Van West Charles’s time would be better spent focusing on and exposing the many injustices perpetrated by the Jagdeo government, and their adverse impact on Guyanese of African descent.

To those who argue we can’t win with Corbin, I have only this to ask, ‘Who can we win with?’

We should not underestimate the deep racial divide in Guyana – a divide that lies just below the surface until an election rears its ugly head, with thanks in no small measure to the party in power.

It is time for Dr Van West Charles to move on.

Yours faithfully,
June Veecock
