The price for most grades of rice on the world market has been on the decline. However, specialty rice has not suffered the same fate. In fact, the prices offered for these varieties have been quite consistent. Numerous reports indicate that fragrant specialty rice will continue to be a high price earner. At present, the Caribbean is competing with Thailand, Vietnam, India and other producers. It is critical that Guyana begin to examine the avenues to becoming more competitive. The production of fragrant rice is definitely one of the avenues.
