Within recent times this nation has had a rude awakening as to the lawlessness that accompanies the observances of some of our religious festivities.

The wanton firing of squibs reveals some break down of law, order and discipline among certain citizens.

The advent of Diwali as well as the celebration of Christmas and old year’s night leaves much to be desired.

The loud explosion of squibs creates a nightmare and hell for both people and animals because of the indiscriminate way in which they are used. The pollution of the atmosphere is not to be ignored in this low carbon era.

Despite warnings by the law enforcement agencies with regard to the illegality of this practice, some persons fire squibs with utmost impunity.

The authorities seem unable to curb the incidence of this offence.

Sad to say, many people have moved away from the true meaning of religious festivals because this raucous, cavalier-style behaviour has nothing to do with religion.

There must be solemnity and restrained jubilation at all times.

Many Guyanese tend to respect laws when they migrate to North America and elsewhere.

Here in Guyana, the security forces should show zero tolerance when people deliberately break the law.
