Dear Editor,
On behalf of my family members and my fellow residents in Alexander Village, I would like to extend a hearty thank you to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for their professionally coordinated and well-executed effort at maintaining order and peace on Diwali night in the village.

Our appeals for a chance to enjoy our festival were responded to in a timely and humane manner and as such, special congratulations must be extended to all those police officers who kept vigil in the village on Diwali night. The professionalism exhibited by these officers in the face of taunts by the vagabonds who invade the village every Diwali night for years was indeed inspiring and encouraged both villagers and outsiders, who used to enjoy the splendour of lights displayed in our village, to come out and enjoy this spectacle for what it is: a celebration of lights to the Goddess Lakshmi.

A special thank you is also extended to Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee and Commissioner Greene for meeting with residents and listening to their suggestions/recommendations. For the first time in his life, my son, who is four years old, was able to walk the streets of the village on Diwali night and enjoy the wondrous spectacle of lights in his village.

Thank you for the peace and we, the villagers, look forward to your continued cooperation in the years to come as I am sure the “architects of terror” will be back next year.

Yours faithfully,
Vanita Mahadeo
