Dear Editor,

It is with deep shock that I read in the SN edition of 2nd November 2009 the article on the abominable conditions at the West Demerara Secondary school. The parent who wrote some days ago highlighting this problem must be commended for the courage in bringing to the public this matter.

However the explanation posited by the Head Mistress as was reported by your correspondent for not having water due to a burnt pump is too frivolous and insults the intelligence of the reading public. This school has been without water for nearly three consecutive school terms. As a member of the public and being a parent myself I feel that the President rather than globe trotting for things like Low Carbon Credits should visit this school as well as others as the probability seems high than there is gross neglect in the delivery of education in Guyana.

I urge that the teachers, parents and students collectively voice their concerns and send a strong signal to the Administration because it seems unlikely that any serious attempt will be made to remedy the situation. Freddie Kissoon is right; this is a manifestation of a failed state.

Yours faithfully,
Mike Singh
