The General Secretary – and presidential aspirant – of the ruling party must be congratulated on his flexibility. It is a flexibility reminiscent of the consistency of Jell-O.

In late October, a report on press freedom was released, in which Guyana did favourably.  The Big Man was pleased, and he was reported to have said that this was a vindication of the government. So far, so good.

Now, fast forward to earlier this week and the latest report on corruption locally.  To put it mildly, this report was not favourable to Guyana.  Now, here is the same General Secretary  in full flight blasting the report as being anti-government, anti-Third World, relying on sinister forces, and so on and so forth.

In other words – or at least from the General Secretary and party’s perspective – if it is good, it is welcome; however, if it is bad, then it is biased and contaminated, and is to be summarily dismissed.

It was Henry Ford who once said that Americans can have any colour of car they wanted, just as long as it was black.  It could be that the GS is saying that those who want to monitor Guyana are welcome to report on their findings, but only if it is favourable.  Might be a little stretch on my part, but I, too, may have still undiscovered gelatinous tendencies.

And now for two quick closing thoughts.  The GS did admit to the probability of a little corruption.  I wonder if his definition of little is at a 9% level, or at the 49.9% level.  Finally, I think that, given the fluidity he has manifested, the GS is the ideal candidate for president.  That would be president of the Chamber of Commerce of Corriverton.  Or Anna Regina.
