Colin Wiltshire played with a straight bat on and off the field

Dear Editor,

I was saddened to learn of the death of my close friend and colleague, Colin Wiltshire. I was aware of his recent illness but little did I know that it would lead to his passing from this world. I take comfort from the example of his life and the fact that he was an inspiration to my generation of cricketers at the Demerara Cricket Club. Colin was a good batsman in his day who had the honour to play for his country.

He had an array of strokes, but he was one of the finest exponents of the on-drive, and was all balance and exquisite timing.

Colin Wiltshire came from a distinguished family which excelled in different aspects of our national life. This family embraced virtues of honesty, integrity and a commitment to help our less fortunate brethren. He was blessed with these virtues in addition to being an individual of equable temperament and a sense of fair play. On and off the field Colin played with a straight bat. He was a true gentleman. His excellent qualities as an individual influenced his tenure as an administrator, when he retired from the game.

I offer my sincere condolences to his  wife, his son, Garfield, and all of his immediate family.

May his soul rest in peace.

Yours faithfully,
Clive Hubert Lloyd
