West Indies Rugby team in…

Shock win

They had promised before leaving these shores to participate in XX edition of the Punta Del Este International Seven-a-side rugby tournament that they could translate good performances into wins.

Yesterday, the West Indies Rugby team under captain Claudius Butts made good on that promise whipping Carrasco Pole by 21 points to 15.

After a very even first half, the West Indies unfolded all their physical power in the second half to secure their first victory in the tough Group Six.

St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Hollis Gree with two tries and Jamaican Luther Burrell, who plays in England, scored one and were the outstanding players for the West Indies rugby side.

However the team was not so successful in their other matches. They lost by five points to 26 to a combined Uruguay-Argentina team and by a similar score to Wolves Moby Dick.

They also lost by 17 points to 33 to the Cardinals.

Some 26 international and national teams are participating in the premier Latin American sevens tournament in the seaside resort town of Punta Del Este in Uruguay.
