Adam, you have conveniently omitted that when the rest of the teams were without packer players, so was England. Mike Brearley was a sound tactician and a quality man manager. He led England to victory against Australia, India and the world cup final.

Mike Brearley's record is excellent, partly because he avoided captaining England when the West Indies were England's opposition. In fact, the number of tests he played against the West Indies can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Come to think of it, many of Brearley's victories were against teams without their "Packer" players.

With regards to the Kevin Petertsen- Peter Moores conflict,Kevin Petersen rightly asserted his resposibility as England captain,in having the final say regarding the composition, development and preparation of the team. The issue here is not whether a coach is a necessary addition but what is the correct and workable line of authority/responsibility regarding the preparation of the team.At international level, every professional player should be able to demonstrate the responsibility of organising their individual training and development. The captain's responsibility is largely about managing and leading the players on the field. The coach's responsibility is to be ready to assist individuals with improving technical aspects of their game and identifying ways to improve performance under the direction of the captain. It is vital that the captain is comfortable about the composition of the team and the manner in which preparation is approached.
Ian Chapell, Clive Lloyd and Mike Brearley were all excellent and successful captains who were fully in charge of the team, in an era when less cricket was played and at a slower pace. Over the last 2 decades however, the game has changed and the captain cannot do it all by himself. A coach is therefore a necessary addition to the squad and the lines of responsibility and authority must be correct and workable, as in the partnerships of Waugh/Buchannan,Nasser Hussein/Fletcher.
