LONDON, England, CMC – Discarded West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds missed out on his second century in as many days as Derbyshire also lost for the second time in 48 hours in the Friends Provident Trophy yesterday.

The left-handed Hinds, who slammed 95 on Sunday, stroked 81 to prop up the hosts’ innings at the County Ground in Derby but they still went down by six wickets to Essex.

Sent in to bat, Derbyshire struggled to 192 for seven off their allotted 43 overs with Hinds’ innings forming the backbone of their total.

He faced 112 balls and hit seven fours and a six, and posted two crucial partnerships that allowed Derbyshire to reach a respectable score.

Hinds shared a 75-run stand for the fourth wicket with Garry Park (18) before adding another 40 for the seventh wicket with Greg Smith who carved out an unbeaten 38 from 30 balls.

Varun Chopra then top scored with 69 in a 103-run, third wicket stand with Matt Walker who got 37, to steer Essex to a comfortable 194 for four.

At the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, Antiguan fast bowler Robbie Joseph sustained his good form with three for 55 to restrict Scotland to 227 for seven off their 50 overs.

Opener Gavin Hamilton got 75 while Cameron Borgas scored 65 and shared an 84-run, third wicket partnership to propel their side.

Opener Joe Denly then stroked an unbeaten 97 to lead Kent to their revised target of 206 for six.
