Banks Beer First Division Super Four receive awards

The top teams of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) 2008 Banks Beer First Division tournament were awarded their prizes in a simple ceremony in the Conference Room of the Banks DIH Building yesterday.

Present at the ceremony were Banks DIH Sales and Marketing Executive Carlton Joao, Brands Manager of Banks Beer Brian Choo-Hen and Communications Man-ager Troy Peters along with Secretary of the GFA Marlon Cole but  representatives from two of the four top teams were not present to accept their awards.

In Joao’s brief remarks he stated that the company was  pleased to be associated with the GFA and commended them for the work they have been doing throughout Georgetown and other areas of the country. In addition, he made it clear that projects are being implemented to further promote football in areas such as Bartica and Berbice, among other parts of the country.

The tournament which was sponsored by Banks DIH under the theme ‘Our Country, Our Life, Our Beer’ is now being run under the Western Union brand in their inaugural year.

Champions BK International Western Tigers were awarded $150,000 and the Banks Beer First Division Trophy and they also swept the individual prizes of the Highest Goal Scorer that went to Devon Millington for accumulating 19 goals, Best Goal Keeper – Peter Miggins and Most Valuable Player – Dillon Fraser.

Flamingo Football Club who played undefeated up to their final encounter against Western Tigers claimed $75,000 and the Runner-up Trophy, while Beacon and Black Pearl Football Clubs claimed the third and fourth place prizes of $50,000 and $25,000 respectively and Houston Stars were adjudged the Most Disciplined Team. The tournament which began on August 19 last year concluded on  February 15 with a double header that saw Tigers trouncing Flamingo 3–1 in the feature match-up. Preceding that encounter was the showdown where Beacon stunned Black Pearl 3–0.

By finishing on top of the other teams Tigers and Flamingo have now been promoted to the Premier League where they have already competed in two matches each but are still looking for their first  win at that level.
