Guyana’s rifle shooters retained the prestigious West Indies short range full-bore team championship which was contested Wednesday at the Tucker Valley ranges in Trinidad and Tobago, according to reports from the Twin Island Republic.

Reports stated that Guyana successfully defended the regional title beating second-placed Trinidad and Tobago by four points; however, the final scores were not available up to press time.

The team match which was billed to take place tomorrow was brought forward due to a shortage of ammunition and it was still unclear whether the Individual competition will be staged.

Guyana’s captain Mahendra Persaud had told Stabroek Sport earlier this week that the championships suffered several setbacks due to a shortage of ammunition forcing organizers to bring the team match forward and efforts were being made to source ammunition to stage the individual competition this weekend.

Guyana’s leading marksman Ransford Goodluck is the current regional individual champion.

Teams from Antigua/ Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Middlesex Rifle Shooting Asso-ciation of Great Britain and host Trinidad and Tobago are participating in the championships which were due to start on Tuesday and end on Sunday.

Guyana is being represented by a 12-member team including three US-based shooters.
Guyana are the holders of both regional long and short-range titles following their success in Jamaica last year,  however only the short- range title was at stake this year because only the shorter ranges are available at Tucker Valley.

The local contingent is due home on Monday.
