Collins holds slim lead over Gafoor heading into final day

Defending champion Fred Collins has moved into first place heading into the final day of the Guyana Association of Scrabble players (GASP) National Championships after finishing yesterday with 13 games and amassing a spread of 1777.

Collins went into the second day in third position behind Abigail McDonald and then leader Moen Gafoor. But he was able to build on his first day spread of 730 and showed why he is Guyana’s best player of the word game.

Gafoor has now slipped to second place and sits one game (12) and 334 spreads (1443) behind Collins and the scramblers would know that the lead could go in a jiffy if Gafoor matches his words right.

Also on 12 games is James Krakowsky with a spread of 1133. Several other notable players also have 12 games, including Orlando Michael, Abigail McDonald and Colin Chichester.

Meanwhile 18-year-old Anand Mohabir, who created quite a stir on day one after upsetting Krakowsky and Chichester, returned on the second day to beat Orlando Michael.

Nine rounds will be contested today at the Bank of Guyana Sports Club. Today’s winner will take home a trophy and $50,000 compliments of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport.
