Netball out of Caribbean Games

President of the Guyana Netball Association Lawrence `Sparrow’ Griffith says that Guyana will not be represented in that discipline at the inaugural Caribbean Games scheduled for next month in Trinidad and Tobago.

Griffith yesterday told Stabroek Sport that a team was not selected to represent Guyana owing to the fact that there was not enough time to adequately select and prepare an U-18 team, for the event.

The Caribbean Games, which commences July 12 and ends July 19, will see athletes competing in track and field, lawn tennis, boxing, volleyball, beach volleyball and netball.

Meanwhile Shelly Daly Ramdyhan of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) says only a female team might be chosen to represent Guyana at the games.

Daly-Ramdyhan said the GLTA was yet to hear from the International tennis Federation (ITF) in order to determine whether the athletes they have shortlisted meet the criteria.

However Guyana’s Aliann Pompey is expected to spearhead the track and field team while boxers Cklive Atwell and Clevon Rocke are tipped to do well in boxing. (Tiadi Blair)
