Windies fined for slow over-rate

NOTTINGHAM, England, CMC – The West Indies were fined yesterday for a slow over-rate during their 15-run loss to Sri Lanka during the Group C match in the ICC World Twenty20 at Trent Bridge.

Match Referee Chris Broad imposed the punishment after Denesh Ramdin’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the designated number at the end of the Sri Lanka innings when time allowances were taken into consideration.

“In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct regulations governing over-rate penalties, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount,” the ICC stated in a press release.

“As such, Ramdin was fined 20 per cent of his match fee while his players received 10-per-cent fines,” the release added.

In a game of academic interest only the Sri Lankans – propelled by Sanath Jayasuriya’s 81 – gathered 192 for five off their 20 overs and West Indies replied with 177 for five.

Playing without injured captain Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo hit the top score of 51 from 38 balls, while Lendl Simmons (29) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (28 not out) were the next highest scorers in the Caribbean side’s innings.

West Indies will play next against India in the  Super-8 phase at Lord’s tomorrow.
