New champ Abigail: I’m definitely not overconfident

New scrabble champion Abigail McDonald says she is geared up for this Sunday’s ‘Fantasy Nails’ scrabble competition as she currently has two liens on the trophy.

Last weekend Mc Donald defeated former champion Fred Collins to become the first female scrabble champion and has now focused her energy on this meet.

When Stabroek Sport spoke with McDonald she explained that it is important not to become conceited as this might cost her the victory.

“I would say I’m definitely not overconfident but it is a great feeling to be the national champion and have to put things into perspective right away…I have tremendous respect for all the competitors and with the right draw it is anybody’s game.”
McDonald won three out of five games against Collins at their last meeting to take home the trophy and $50,000.

She noted that “we should expect Leon Belony and Collins, who holds one and two liens respectively. Moen Gafoor, Grace Hercules of Linden, Anand Mohabir and James Krakowsky are all expected to bring on some fierce competition.”

So far 16 persons have been confirmed to take part but the competition is still open to members of the public and anyone who feels they can step up to the challenge. The event is expected to commence at 10:30 am at the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce building on Waterloo Street this Sunday.
