The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was the venue for last Sunday’s Junior National Karate Championship under the Guyana Karate Federation (GKF).

Some 92 karate students were judged on their Kata and Kumite techniques, skill and strength at the end of which first, second and third places were awarded.

There were impressive performances from Brittany Singh in the six to eight years category. Though quite petite amongst her counterparts, she managed to gain second place in Kata and third position in Kumite. This was Singh’s first championship performance. Shane Rahaman was the most impressive across the border coming in at second in Kata and first place in Kumite in the boys 12 to 14 years category.

On Saturday the GKF will showcase various aspects of karate at the National Park and YMCA in recognition of annual Olympic Day. Sixty students of the art are expected to showcase what they have learnt at the YMCA between the hours of 4.30 pm and 6 pm.

Another group of 60 will be at the National Park carrying out their display at the same time. The general public is invited to observe the performances by the students.
