(BBC)England’s Paul Collingwood says he and his team-mates must take individual responsibility for saving the first Ashes Test against Australia today.

England trailed by 239 runs after both sides’ first innings were reduced to 20-2 before rain intervened.
“The batsmen must take responsibility – that means seeing the job through yourself and not relying on others,” said Collingwood.

“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of pressure but we’ve got the men to do it.”
Collingwood took England’s only wicket of a frustrating fourth day in Cardiff, after Marcus North and Brad Haddin had put on 200 to help Australia reach 674-6 before they declared.

“That was a tough day,” admitted Collingwood. “But we’ve got to regroup, refresh and bat for three sessions to save this game.

“Sunday is a very important day and I’m sure there will be plenty of men around the bat. We’re two down, but we do still have eight wickets in the shed.

“Some guys are going to have to put their hands up and perform. We’re going to have to play very well, but we’ve got some very good players in that dressing-room so we know we can do it.”

Australian century-maker North, who finished unbeaten on 125, says he is confident they can go 1-0 up in the series today.
“I think we have ground England down in the past couple of days,” said North. “Then when we got out there with the ball we got a couple of wickets, and that has put us in a really good position.

“It is going to be a tough day of Test cricket on Sunday. They have to go out there and try to save the Test match. There is only one team that can win the game, and for us that is a really good position to be in.

“If we can put the pressure on them for long enough then we hope they will fold under that.”
