Binns wins heat at FINA Championships

The Guyana swim team had a fair day in the pool yesterday at the 13th FINA World Championships as Fabian Binns swept to the first heat win for Guyana at the championships.

According to team coach Nicholas Fraser the win came as a result of a good start time of 0.66 seconds in addition to a good lane draw.

Meanwhile Niall Roberts in his 50m freestyle commented that he could have gone faster after clocking a time of 24.96 but overall he felt his performance was good.

For his second race of the day there was little time to prepare after exiting the 50m freestyle. Within the short break light stretches and massages were done to promote recovery.

Fraser said Roberts had a good start but did not look as fluent as he should have.
“Niall swam in lane 8 of heat 4 with an entry time of 1:00.02.  He had a good start and a good breakout.  His stroke did not look as fluent in the latter half of the first length finishing the 50m with a time of 27.62 which was approximately ½ a second behind what I thought he should have done and his entry became sloppy toward the end with a time of 1:00.53.”
After the race Roberts said the reason for the time was due to pain in the calf muscle which he placed ice on after the 50m freestyle race.

In the 50m butterfly Noelle Smith entered the event with a time of 34.66 and swam in lane 8 of heat 2. Her coach said she swam an excellent race, bettering her reaction time with a time of 0.96, but her race had a little blemish with a slightly long glide at the finish. But she bettered her entry time by more than two seconds with a time of 32.34 seconds.

After exiting the pool she commented that her performance could have been faster but hoped to bounce back in today’s breaststroke.

Guyana will conclude their participation at this year’s championships with Henk Lowe and Smith in the last three events for the team. The 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke respectively. The championships will end tomorrow.
