The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) will stage a race walk event today to usher in the activities of its fifth Race Walk Month aimed at expanding and promoting the sport locally. The race commences at 6.30am at the Prairie International Hotel on the East Bank of Demerara and finishes at the Soesdyke Primary School. According to a release, Coordinator of CSTC, Olga Harry, said the popularity of the sport was growing both competitively and as a leisure pursuit.

However, Harry said that more sponsorship was needed and she called on the government, the business community and sports fans (the main stakeholders) to support the development of race walking in the country.  The month long programme of events will be held under the theme ‘Race Walking-A Healthy Sport.’

Among the events planned are Race Walk training sessions and workshop photographic exhibitions and the first awards ceremony to honour sponsors and race walkers. Races will be held in different parts of the country but the main event will be in Bartica on August 23.

A special opening ceremony is billed for August 2 at the club’s headquarters at Soesdyke while August 13 has been designated Race Walk Day and a special ceremony will be held beginning with a six-lap race starting at 6.30am. Today’s event is open to male and female (seniors), juniors, veterans and differently-abled competitors.
