Guyana wins four karate gold medals

Guyana won four gold, two silver and four bronze medals at the eighth International Shotokan Karate Federation/Caribbean Karate College Championships in St. Lucia.

The team of 10 was headed by Master Frank Woon-A-Tai and included chairman of the college

Chetram Mortley, senior instructor Jeffrey Wong, Ashley Lopes, Eric King, Krystal Lopes, Aliyah Wong, Joshua Mortley, Tashana Wong, Tanya Teixeira and Kenny Wong.

The boys and girls 7-9 category performed the best, with both genders attaining gold medals.  Joshua Mortley won gold in the individual boy’s kata while Aliyah Wong copped gold in the individual kata.

In the senior team Chetram Mortley, Amir Khouri and Jeffrey Wong were on top of their game as winners in  their category.

According to senior instructor of the Guyana Karate College, Jeffrey Wong the team did an excellent job, particularly in the boys and girls 7-9 category and boys and girls 15-17 age group.

The team made a brief visit to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Frank Anthony on Tuesday where he congratulated the karatekas on their success and  encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.

Guyana Karate College instructor Joe Woon-A-Tai who is also the brother of Master Frank Woon-A-Tai has been drafted in to assist while helping to promote the college.

“I am here to provide assistance to the college which is continually growing and what we are hoping to do is open more karate schools in Guyana whether it is in Georgetown, Linden, on the East Coast or wherever it takes us.”

The instructor said he hoped to see numerous karate schools opened  across Guyana in all regions under the Guyana Karate College umbrella.
